What is CBM in Shipping?
CBM stands for Cubic Metre and is the universal unit of measurement for cargo volume in international shipping. Whether you are exporting garments from Tirupur, spices from Kochi, or auto parts from Pune, the CBM of your shipment determines how much space it occupies in a container, which directly impacts your freight costs.
How to Calculate CBM for Export Shipments
Calculating CBM is straightforward. Follow these steps to determine the total volume of your export shipment:
- Measure your carton: Measure the length, width and height of one carton in centimetres (or inches).
- Convert to metres: Divide each dimension by 100 to convert centimetres to metres. If using inches, multiply by 2.54 first to get centimetres.
- Calculate CBM of one carton: Multiply Length x Width x Height in metres. For example, a 60 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm carton = 0.6 m x 0.4 m x 0.3 m = 0.072 CBM.
- Multiply by quantity: Multiply the CBM of one carton by the total number of cartons to get the total CBM of your shipment.

CBM Formula
The CBM formula is simple:
CBM = Length (m) × Width (m) × Height (m) × Quantity
For air freight volumetric weight, the formula is:
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (Length cm × Width cm × Height cm) ÷ Divisor × Quantity
The divisor is 6000 for standard air cargo and 5000 for express courier services like DHL and FedEx.

FCL vs LCL: Which Should You Choose?
Understanding the difference between Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) is critical for cost-effective shipping from India.
FCL (Full Container Load)
FCL means you rent an entire container exclusively for your cargo. This is typically more cost-effective when your cargo exceeds 15 CBM. FCL offers faster transit times, reduced handling, and lower risk of damage or loss.
LCL (Less than Container Load)
LCL means your cargo shares container space with other shippers. You pay only for the space you use (per CBM), making it ideal for smaller shipments. LCL is more flexible but involves additional handling at consolidation and deconsolidation points.

Air Freight Volumetric Weight Explained
When shipping by air, airlines charge on the higher of the actual physical weight or the volumetric (dimensional) weight. This ensures that bulky but light cargo is billed fairly.
For example, a carton measuring 60 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm with an actual weight of 5 kg has a volumetric weight of (60 x 40 x 30) / 6000 = 12 kg. The airline will charge you for 12 kg, not 5 kg, because the volumetric weight is higher.

Container Loading Tips for Indian Exporters
- Measure accurately: Always measure the outer dimensions of your cartons, not the inner dimensions, to account for packaging thickness.
- Consider weight distribution: Even if your cargo fits by volume, it may exceed the container's maximum payload. Check both volume and weight limits.
- Use standard carton sizes: Standardising your carton sizes makes container loading more efficient and reduces wasted space.
- Plan for palletisation: If you are palletising, remember that pallets take up space and reduce usable container volume.
- Book early from major ports: During peak season, container availability at JNPT, Mundra and Chennai can be tight. Book your space early.
